95+ Christmas Card Messages

95+ Christmas Card Messages

Introduction

'Tis the season to be jolly & send Christmas cards to friends and family! Fa la la la la la la la la!

Christmas began as a Christian celebration of the birthday of Jesus around 200 AD. Some believe Christmas is related to the Jewish Festival of Lights; others note its association with Saturnalias, a Roman holiday.
People celebrate Christmas by giving gifts to friends & family. Many pass on the tradition of Santa Claus to their families, which originated with tales of St. Nicholas in the fourth century. Some attempt to maintain simple practices while others enjoy splendid celebrations & piles of presents.

Our favorite Christmas tradition, of course, is sending Christmas cards! Many centuries after people began celebrating Christmas, the Victorian educator & patron of the arts, Sir Henry Cole, was overcome with anxiety. Letters from the postal service were piling up, and he hadn't had time to respond to them. He had too many friends & not enough time for correspondence.

So, around the Christmas holiday in 1843, he partnered with an artist friend, J.C. Horsley, and a London printer to print a thousand copies of the first Christmas card. Sending these unique cards would help him catch up on correspondence and send holiday greetings. The idea caught on quickly. In 1875, Louis Prang printed the United States' first Christmas cards in Boston. And in 1915, the Kansas City-based Hall Brothers Company (later changed to Hallmark) published the first modern Christmas card.

We are forever thankful for the creative people who created this tradition & have continued to innovate. Because of them, we can enjoy the sweetest & most meaningful holiday tradition: sending Christmas cards.
